Secondary Education-Teacher Certification, M.A.T.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (offered for both Elementary and Secondary Education Specialization) is designed to accommodate full and part-time students. The program requires field experiences in which candidates teach lessons to a student or a small group of students. In the final semester, students must be available for full-time student teaching. *Clinical Placements will be within a 20 mile radius from New Jersey City University.
 

Graduate Advanced Certification Programs

Reading and Reading Specialist Certification, M.A.

The 100% online Master of Arts in Reading/Reading Specialist Certification is offered through the Department of Teaching, Learning and Literacy. We prepare literacy specialists for careers in teaching, coaching, training, coordinating instructional programs, diagnosing and treating literacy problems, and developing curriculum. Literacy specialists may work one-on-one, in small groups, or with whole classes. They also focus on all aspects of literacy: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing.

Urban Education—Teaching and Learning in Urban Schools Specialization, M.A.

The Master of Arts in Urban Education: Teaching and Learning in Urban Schools is designed as professional development for teachers who have at least one full year of experience teaching in a P-12 classroom. Coursework is interdisciplinary and addresses the special challenges that arise in urban settings, in particular the need for culturally responsive instruction and assessment, and strategies for classroom management. Special attention is paid to effects of race, class, language, and gender on achievement and how social, economic, and political conditions influence classrooms. At this time this program is only available to completers of the New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey program and the NJCU P-3 Specialized Alternate Route program. The program may accept up to 18 transfer credits from the New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey program or the NJCU P-3 Specialized Alternate Route program.
