What to Expect

The Program begins with a two-week residency at NJCU where doctoral students are introduced to historical and contemporary topics in Civil Security. After returning home, coursework continues through online platforms.

Over the next four semesters (fall, spring, summer, fall) courses focus on core competencies in Civil Security. Doctoral students are in residence at NJCU for two weekends during fall and spring semesters with the rest of coursework completed through online platforms. The next is another two-week summer residency rotation, followed by online coursework. Along the way, doctoral students are consistently working with their dissertation committee to develop research questions that lead to impactful dissertations on a security-related topic of the student’s interest.

After completing the core competency courses, doctoral students progress to dissertation writing and research classes focused on turning their research question(s) into their dissertation. Degree completion requires 30 credits of core competency coursework, 18 credits of dissertation coursework, and a successful dissertation defense.
